We are a small family business who specialise in breeding out bred family dogs.
We breed from lines that are British Veterinary Association Health screened for hereditary illnesses required for that breed or we cross breeds where the defective gene does not exist in one of the parties. Wherever possible we carry out DNA testing for the common hereditary conditions and use DNA clear stud dogs guaranteeing your puppy will not develop that particular disease e.g. PRA Progessive Retinal Atrophy.
We do everything we can to breed healthy quality puppies with great temperaments that will be part of your family for life.
We are licensed by Newport City Council and copies of our certificates are displayed further down this page.
BUYING A PUPPY
It is a big decision to buy a puppy and we need you to understand what is involved.
•
Having a puppy is like having a baby and you will need to organise someone to be with the puppy the majority of the time for the first four weeks. The maximum you will be able to leave a young pup in the daytime is an hour.
•
You will have to get up during the night to an 8 – 10 week old puppy and very late at night and early in the morning for many weeks.
•
Puppies are social animals and need company for most of the time. It is not practical or acceptable to buy a puppy if you are out of the house more than 4 hours per day unless you can take the puppy with you.
•
Puppies need training and grooming and you need to be sufficiently committed to give this time to the puppy during the first few months. The first six months are the most important in the puppies’ life and the responsibility is yours to ensure you develop a well mannered and obedient dog.
•
It is very important you choose a type of dog that will fit in with your family. The size, attitude and personality of each breed type are different. First of all you need to decide on the breeding and size to define the type. Secondly you need to choose a puppy from the litter that will suit your family. Noisy families with young outgoing children need confident outgoing puppies. We can help you choose the right dog for you.
•
Unless you are very experienced or going to keep your puppies outdoors in a kennel it is never a good idea to have two puppies. It is very much harder to train two (more like training five) than one. If you want two dogs it is best to train one and have a second when the first is 12 months old. Your first dog will then help you to train the second.
•
Having said all this having a puppy is a wonderful experience whatever you or your family’s age. It is particularly good for children to grow up with a dog and a puppy will become a faithful, loving companion and member of your family for many years.

Our Breeding Policy
We are a small family run licensed kennel - we care for our dogs to the very best standards and only breed from top quality, health checked dogs. No one can completely remove all health risks from purchasing a dog but we try to reduce these to a minimum by only breeding from lines with a history over several generations of BVA checks required for that breed. All our Stud dogs are hip scored and eye tested if required for that breed and the majority are also DNA tested for PRA and other recessive conditions. DNA testing is much better than eye testing and means we can guarantee your puppy will not develop that particular disease if it is caused by a recessive gene.
We also carefully decide which breeds to cross to eradicate or dramatically reduce the incidence of any hereditary disease.
We also have carefully chosen our Stud Dogs - many have a large number of International, European and American Champions in their pedigrees who are not related. This gives us a sound and broad gene pool reducing the risk of bad temperament and health problems. We do not line breed at any time and do not breed from even distantly related dogs.
We feel temperament is as important as looks and again will only breed from dogs that have outstanding temperaments. You can meet our dogs and see this for yourself.
Our aim is to breed a healthy family dog that is easy to train and own with a loving temperament that will be part of your family for life. We are not breeders of designer dogs and will not line breed or in breed at any time. We are completely opposed to the many breeding practices that take place for the show ring which inevitably results in genetic illnesses and mental health problems. The RSPCA and the BBC have recently made programmes on these problems. The films can be viewed on line through several sources including the BBC website. If you are interested in learning more just type "pedigree dogs" into Google and you will be able to access several sites showing the programmes. It was due to these policies that the BBC withdrew from televising Crufts and Pedigree removed its sponsorship (Crufts is now sponsored by DFS).
We do not pre neuter puppies and are totally against this practise which sadly is carried out by many breeders. For a puppy less than 8 weeks of age to go through a full anaesthetic and such a major operation (especially bitches who have a full hysterectomy) is barbaric. The only reason this is carried out by breeder is to stop you breeding with their dogs. We will ask you to sign a contract when you purchase your puppy that sets out that you will not breed with a dog purchased from us and that you will have that dog neutered between six and ten months of age in accordance with your vets recommendations.
All our dogs have access to outside areas. They are exercised, have toys and play areas, and are kept in clean and comfortable surroundings. Our dogs probably have more attention and exercise than many pets as they have someone with them from dawn till dusk each day. They are never left alone and always have the company of a human or kennel mate. Our puppies are therefore very well socialised. You are able to meet the puppies parents and view any certificates or documentation on our database during your visit.
It is our intention to breed top quality, healthy dogs with wonderful temperaments that will be part of your family for life.
WENTWOOD PUPPY WAITING LIST POLICY
Due to high demand for certain breeds, and improve our customer service we have introduced a new waiting list policy.
We offer a set number of places on the waiting list for the breed of your choice which is determined by the number of puppies we are expecting to be available within the next three months.
If you wish to join our waiting list, we will ask you for your name, address, email and both home and mobile telephone numbers.
We take a £150 deposit by card over the phone. This deposit is fully refundable at any time if you wish to be removed from the waiting list.
When a litter is born or we receive a cancellation we will contact you in order giving you the opportunity of reserving a position to choose a pup from that litter. You will need to make a decision at this point whether you want a dog or a bitch, but we cannot make guarantees as to colours if there are a variety of colours within the litter.
If the puppies are not of the colour or sex of your choice you can either have your deposit refunded or move up the list awaiting the next litter when we will contact you again.
If you wish to proceed your deposit will be transferred across to that litter and again remains fully refundable. You will be invited to visit us when the puppies are 6 weeks old to meet us, see the litter and meet the parents. If you are not happy with the litter at this point again you can have your deposit refunded or transfer to the next available litter. If you are happy when you see the puppies, an appointment will be made in booking order for you to come to choose your puppy at 8 weeks of age when they will have been fully vetted, microchipped and ready to leave.
If all of the places on the waiting list are taken when you call, we will take your name and contact details without a deposit and contact you when a place on the list becomes available.
BOOKING AND PAYMENT POLICY
When you book a puppy from a litter we complete a form over the telephone and you are booking your position to choose from the litter. We need to know at this time whether you want a dog or a bitch. Therefore the first person to book a bitch will have first choice of the bitches at 8 weeks, second will have second choice etc. We book puppies on payment of a £150 deposit (taken over the telephone by card) which is fully refundable should you change your mind and not wish to proceed. If you have already paid a deposit on a waiting list we will be contacting you to see if you wish to book a puppy from a litter born and your waiting deposit will be transferred to the litter.
When you pay your booking deposit we will email you a receipt and an information pack on preparing to have your puppy home (if we have not already sent you one).
We will also book two appointments – the first for you to visit to see mum, the puppies and dad and all their paperwork when the pups are 6 weeks old.
We also retain the right to return your deposit should we feel you are not able to offer the dog a suitable home.
The second is for you to come to choose your puppy after it has been vetted at 8 weeks of age - these viewing appointments are in strict order of booking – so the order of deposits gives you the order of choice from the litter. Viewing appointments are normally for the first weekend after the puppies are 8 weeks of age and when they have been fully vetted, microchipped and received their first multiple vaccination.
When you come to choose your puppy you will be able to see all the relevant paperwork and parents. If you decide not to proceed you will receive a full refund on the card you used to pay the deposit. Alternatively you can switch the deposit onto a different litter.
When you come to choose your puppy you will be able to spend time with the puppies on an individual and group basis in our puppy play room. You will be fully informed prior to choosing your puppy of any issues found by the vet and these will be clearly written on the vet report. When you have chosen your puppy we will spend a further 30 – 40 minutes on paperwork and answering any questions you may have. Please read our puppy information sheet attached which covers how to travel your puppy home and how to care for your new puppy. It is a very big responsibility and a full time occupation to have a new pup. It is like having a new baby and needs as much thought and care.
Once you have chosen your puppy we require payment in full by chip and pin card or cash - we do not take cheques. This is the point of commitment and your payment is no longer refundable. Your puppy can leave with you on the day or stay with us for a maximum of 1 week provided it you have paid in full and we have activated the insurance. No charge is made for keeping the puppy here for a further week but you may have to pay for a further vaccination at a cost of £25.
Where puppies are travelling abroad the time they need to stay here can vary dependent on vaccination and travel requirements and so please call if you would like information. Sometimes these puppies have to stay with us for longer periods when a kennelling charge of £10 per night is made plus we can quote for further vaccination, passport and any other costs. There have been recent DEFRA changes to European travel and we can give you information on this.
PUPPIES OVER THE AGE OF 8 WEEKS, REDUCED PUPPIES AND ADULT DOGS.
We take the same deposit on puppies over the age of 8 weeks and reduced puppies. However, for the welfare of the puppy, in these cases we will only hold the puppy for a maximum of four days before viewing. You must be aware that we will expect you to pay in full and take the puppy with you when you come. We reduce puppies to enable them to leave to immediate homes. The same applies for adult dogs for re-homing. The earlier the puppy is settled into its new home the better.
Payment methods - we accept cash, credit and debit card payments for deposits.
We only accept cleared funds for final or full payments when the puppy is leaving i.e. cash, debit card or credit card with chip and pin or on line transfer cleared prior to collection.
We also accept the same payment methods in our shop.
We strongly urge you to carefully consider the work and effort you will need to put into caring for a puppy before purchasing. It is expensive financially and emotionally to make the wrong decision.
Any illness, veterinary problem or injury that occurs after you collect your puppy should be covered under your Pet Plan insurance policy. This is provided by us free of charge with the puppy on collection. It is your responsibility to insure the puppy for
veterinary fees and loss after the four week policy has expired; Pet Plan will contact you before this date. We strongly recommend that you continue this policy which will give you continuous cover. We also highly recommend Pet Plan as they normally pay your vet direct and in a very short time frame. It is very important that you read the small print of any other policies prior to cancelling your Pet Plan cover. Most insurance companies have a four week waiting period during which time you will be without cover.
PURCHASERS RIGHTS
The purchaser has 7 days for the puppy to be examined by a practising veterinary surgeon. During this period (following an examination), the purchaser has the right to return the dog because of a defect that will permanently detrimentally affect the puppy as a family pet (other than that described on the veterinary report sheet). If there is such a defect, a written vets certificate must be provided from the veterinary surgeon stating that the condition pre-exists the purchase date and will permanently affect the puppy and have a long term effect on its health and welfare. The puppy must be returned together with the veterinary certificate within 14 days of purchase. On production of such certificate and on the return of the puppy within the time frame the purchase price will be refunded in full or we will offer you an alternative puppy. No other costs or expenses will be paid.
If the condition is pre existing and will permanently affect the puppy and you wish to keep the puppy we will make a refund to you of between 5% and 30% of the purchase price (dependent on the condition). Again, on receipt of a full veterinary report within the above time frame which must state that the condition existed prior to purchase and will permanently affect the puppy. No other costs or expenses will be paid.
If you purchase a puppy but decide you cannot cope, your circumstances change or you are unable to keep it for any other reason
IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO KEEP YOUR PUPPY FOR ANY REASON
If you cannot keep your puppy after purchase for any reason whatsoever we will have the puppy back up to a maximum age of 16 weeks. Here we will care for him/her on your behalf for a maximum of 7 days. During this period you can choose to have your puppy back and we will make a charge of £10 per night for kennelling.
Following the 7 day period we will re home the puppy but no payment or refund will be made.
This is on the basis of the puppy being in good health and being returned to our kennels at your own cost together with fully completed Petlog transfer document and vaccination record. In the case of Kennel Club registered dogs the registration document must be returned duly signed. We therefore strongly urge you to carefully consider the work and effort you will need to put into caring for a puppy before purchasing. It is expensive financially and emotionally to make the wrong decision.
ALLERGIES
Please read the information in our breed information pages. Some types of cross have a lower allergen level than others.
NO PUPPY OR DOG CAN BE GUARANTEED NON ALLERGENIC AND THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT YOU OR YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE ALLERGIC TO THE PUPPY WHEN YOU GET IT HOME OR AT A LATER STAGE WHEN IT DEVELOPS IT'S ADULT COAT. NO REFUNDS CAN BE GIVEN IF YOU HAVE TO RETURN A PUPPY DUE TO AN ALLERGIC REACTION. WE WILL REHOME THE PUPPY IN ACCORDANCE WITH OUR POLICY ABOVE.
If you have any questions on our puppy policy please telephone 01633 400153 or email us at wentwoodsales@tiscali.co.uk
REMEMBER WHEN YOU BUY A PUPPY YOU BECOME RESPONSIBLE FOR ANOTHER LIFE - A PUPPY IS NOT A TOY - CHILDREN CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOOKING AFTER A PUPPY - A NEW PUPPY IS LIKE HAVING A NEW BABY - THE RESPONSIBILITY IS YOURS.
